I would like to save the cylinder if I can and maybe the piston? I can't feel any deep gouges above the rings but below I can. Any thoughts?

Take it apart and see if you an save the cylinder, The piston is questionable. I have an old PM Canadien that I cleaned up and thinking I would never find a new piston I just cleaned it up and put some new rings in it and it runs a it should. If you can find a new or used piston that would be the way to go.

Can anyone help me with a few part numbers for a piston and rings for my new 4000. I'm finding out just how hard it is to find a piston and rings. I haven't tore into the saw yet just trying to decide just what to do.

Those Rings are almost impossible to find unfortunately. A PP 395 is the same thing if you stumble across something.

Is there a different top end that fits? To make a hybrid?

The only thing that you could do would be to convert down to a 3700 instead of a 4000. You would need to replace the piston and cylinder and then you would have a 60cc instead of the 64cc. I have a 3700 that I modified that will out cut a stock 4000 with no problem. I lowered the Jug by .015", widened the intake and exhaust ports, shaped the tops of the transfers to point towards the intake and cleaned them up some, cleaned up the plastic intake runner of casting flaws, and then advanced the timing, and opened up the muffler and matched the exhaust on the muffler to the exhaust on the cylinder. Pulls a 24" bar pretty good and will out run my stock Stihl 036 easy.
So there are some other options.
