Well my chain I shortened didn't break during a piss rev.
It's not like I've done hundreds of chains but the few I've done for myself have never given me any trouble. I just grind the rivets, use a punch to knock out the link and add or shorten to length. On the new preset I peen them over with a hammer and run it.
