Worse than that, they were primarily paid in "scrip",
Which must in turn be spent at the company store. A large portion of the employees would always end up owing their souls to the company store,or more than their check would cover, essentially becoming slaves to the company.( per the lyrics of Tennessee Ernie Fords song 16 tons..)
