This is a trick question....how can you add fuel to 1.75 gallons and end up with 1.75 gallons? If you would like to turn 1.75 gallons of 32:1 mix into 40:1 mix, you would have to add 1.75qts (.44 gal) of fuel for a total 0f 2.18 gallons of mix.

No matter how many ozs of the mixed gas you removed it
will still remain 32:1, like it originally was mixed.
Me thinks 34.16 ozs will bring you up to 40:1

Better still, put that 1.75 gallons in
Got it wrong, I think it will take 34.16 oz 's of gas.

At 32:1, you have 1oz of oil per quart. So after removing a quart of mix, you have 7oz of oil left in the can. At 40:1, you multiply 7 x 40 = 280 ounces of fuel. If you are starting with 1.75 gal or 7 quarts, that is 224 ounces. 280-224= 56 = 1.75 qts.

Your figures look correct. << go with this.
I am a simpleton / tired, I wrongly assumed 1/5 more fuel was required to bring the mix from 32:1
to 40:1, 170.8 ozs I think makes 1.75 us gallons, multiply this by 1.20
to get you the extra fifth, then take away the 170.8 ozs already present and
the remainder is what I thought was required to get 40:1, that is how I got 34.16 ozs.

I am not used with ozs here, we use the litre and ml, so I am probably
wrong. Internet told me 97.6 ozs per US gallon, so that's what I used.
Also could be 1/4 extra fuel, and that would 42.7 ozs

And using @farminkarman 's figures in my equation, returns 56 ozs, he
    is indeed correct.
Thanks for the quick introduction to the world of ounces.

4oz per gallon is easy. No maffs required. I say leave it and run it

Mine are sold in 32 and 128 oz. But many are available in every common possible mixing scenario…2.6, 3.2, 5.6, 6.4, 8, 16…….it’s no wonder wonder folks are confused

That is quite a selection, should allow for different mix ratios.

Started buying oil by the gallon and mixing 3 oz to gallon. Life got simpler and a little cheaper.

Thought of getting one those spigots they use on liquor at saloons.

This is what I did. Added 8oz to 2 gallons. So 32:1 is safe to run in a saw Randy has tuned for 40:1?
