I see them on ebay being cheap and plentiful can't find much on info about them im sure parts availability will be like any other 30 + year old saw on the market.

They are good saws, I was surprised a bit that their throttle respons was great, didnt expect that, better then my 40 Practica and 133SG who both are closed port jug, but not as supreme as 242 is.

Most parts are still avaible, only difficult main parts are piston and PTO bearing.

Here is mine. I got a used P&C, recoil, and top cover from @bplust and @Landmark to get it together. He had both grey and white top covers at the time. They may still have some parts for these saws if you wind up needing some. (Edit to add in the parts saw from Landmark. I saw he liked the post and it triggered my memory. )

+1

Ya, the PTO bearings are tough to find because you have all of the remaining ones!

My limbing saw is a grey top 44. They're awesome machines, good throttle response, excellent oil output, and built as a pro saw should be, but parts availability is an issue. They're not difficult to find, so sourcing donor saws for parts is an option.

I've got 10-12 44's. Grey top of my Dad's got me hooked on them (CAD has absolutely nothing to do with it) Coils are a little hard to find too. Outstanding little saw cuts way bigger than 42mm open port. Bought my first one @ thrift store for $15.00 looked like it had been under the porch forever. Cleaned it up a little popped on 2 pulls and ran like a banshee. Since it was so ugly we used it to cut roots in ditch sides when we built roads. Still have it. Parts saws or knowing somebody that has parts is best way to replace parts.

A 41 is on the left; my 61 is on the right. I sold the 41 and kept the classic 61:

As long as we are at it, what is the difference between a 44 and a 41? Anybody know?

Yeah, a 44 is a baby pro saw like a 242xp. A 41 is actually not a bad saw for a clamshell. You can rebuild one for next to nothing, there's millions of parts around since they're the same as some poulans

44,is the first saw I ever bought way back in 1987 when I was a mere 24 years old. In some ways it's still my favorite saw, & yes I still own it. I remember when I went looking for it I found a dealer who was also a logger, he only had44s & 61s plus all the pro saws of that time 181s etc. He said he wouldn't sell the newer models 45 etc. cause he thought the new designs were junk. ;)
