This is the vise I carry in my kit, when working in the timber. It's machined from aluminum billet, so is light to carry, but is a heavy-duty item. Couldn't be more pleased with it, and the seller is first-rate, too.

That looks pretty slick. The only thing I'm not crazy about, is it appears you need to have a split already started, as it looks like it has a fairly blunt end. Nice though, and good to see some ingenuity going against the standard one's sold by the big boys!

Yep, just cut a slot down in the stump/log, then pound in the vise. I usually use my gloved fist to tap it in. Doesn't take much for it to hold.

I came across this vise when looking for one to purchase, and like you I really liked the ingenuity employed, and how it differed from the usual offerings.
