Well after all the trouble I had in the last few weeks with my Homelite,I'm getting a new saw.I sort of narrowed it down to a Stihl 171/170 or a Poulan pro pp4218a.Other than the Stihl being 16" and the Poulan being 18",what can you guys(and gals) tell me about these three saws? I like the Stihl because of the dealer aspect for repair or warranty if needed the box stores are not the greatest for that.I just need it for clean up and the odd tree that falls from the woods into the yard.I will also use it for prepping logs for bowls (I'm a wood turner). I just don't want a pos that I will need to replace in two years.

I hate to recommend a Stihl, but the ms170 is on sale for 150 at my local John Deere dealer. Ive already told 3 people to go buy one this week.

If you want a firewood saw get a pp5020. Refurbs are only 139.99 on ebay. My uncle has 2... He beats the crap out of them and loves them.

Maybe you should check out the ms250 or 251. You'll always have enough saw to easily cut up to about 20" wood and it's small.
The MS 250 had been on sale a year or so ago for $300. I picked up a like new MS 250 with 16"bar for $160. Its the one saw I will loan out. It does everything needed and not out much. I do send it with my old chaps, Trufuel and couple extra chains. I could have sold it several times over.

Little Stihl every time. Those poulans that come badged up as huskys, poulans, mcullochs etc waste so much of my life in the workshop. Horrid little saws.

Here's the difference as I see it. Sooner or later, doesn't matter who made it, it's going to require service, especially the fuel system. Parts for Poulans can easily be ordered online, delivered to your door, they're also quite affordable. For folks with no Stihl dealer or you have one with stick 'em up pricing, this is an option to ponder.
