That can be cleaned up IMHO.

Yes, I cuncur as well. Clean up the transfer, make sure there are no raised edges on the deep score from the clip, and view it as a mini boost port. New rings and piston and he's back in business.
It may not fly here on the garden tool enthusiast forum, but that will run great in the working world.
If you are going to replace it, I call dibs.

It is not mine. It is a good buddy of mine saw. It is the first I have seen a oem Stihl cir clip fall out.
Same thing happened to a 460 of mine a few years ago. First saw I ever bought new. It didn't stop at just the circlip though, the pin walked out into the transfer and sheared the bridge off, cracked the piston and smashed aluminum chunks everywhere. New oem top end and it's still going. It sucks, but it does happen.

It looks like there is a gouge in the cylinder wall below the transfer opening. Is that in a spot that won't cause issues?

Even the gouge just above the transfer will be ok.

Just use a fine grit diamond ball to deburr it, the hand sand with 220 grit. Wash it good, new piston and back to the wood pile.

Hell, the piston might be usable with just new rings.

your about half right, it may run and be serviceable but in a retail shop, that cylinder would be headed straight for the scrap bin and I've sent many that looked just like it there, I wont put my name on something like that going out the door either as a repair to a customers saw or as a trade in that I'm fixing to flip. Personally if I bought a saw or had one repaired and I found that cylinder on it I would be pissed. $225 for a new P&C kit, $80 for jsut a piston....its a $1000 saw to replace so for me its a no brainer to fix it right.

If your interested in a 044 slant fin cylinder that has some minor grooves I have one only because i bought it and was told it was a good cylinder only to get it in my hands and find its not anything i wanted to install on a customer saw

I agree Nate. If it’s a customer saw it gets fixed proper. If it was my own firewood saw, I’d clean it up and run it though.

I think, if your customer is somebody who you have a relationship with, and could explain to them about what you are doing, it might be a way to save them some $$. (Hey, I can put a new top end in this for you for $$$, or I can clean up the jug and put a piston in it for $$, or clean up the jug and piston, and put rings only for $)

I would only do that for known, repeat customers who were informed enough to understand what I was doing, and that it probably won't last as long as new parts, though.
