I finally got a chance to look at the 261. It started for me cold with 5 pulls and once warm 1 pull. Seemed normal to me. I think my Dad is just getting older and not pulling it as fast a he used to. I spent some much meeded time on his chain and bar. kinda sad seeing how he is getting older. Chain was a mess and the bar needed some rail dressing. He just doesn't tools like he used to.
Well, just look past all that, and be glad he's stihl sawin'. Keep an eye on his stuff and whip it into shape when needed. He may not saw as often, so keep his fuel supply fresh.

I'll add that it is great that he has you around to help him out. Just always make sure he stays safe, or that is when you will have to intervene.

One of the toughest things my brother and I had to do was to take all my Dad's guns, it was just time. When he asked where they were, I told him I took them to clean them, which was OK with him, and he never asked about them again.

We just knew his judgement was not what it used to be.

My dad is still in good shape, but I thought it was strange when he took interest in a MS211c I rebuit, with the easy start in my garage....I showed him how easy it was to start, he said man that would be easy on my old shoulder.....needless to say I told him to take it home with him....he resisted, but I insisited...he took it, he likes it a lot....I guess no one is ammune to aging, sad as it can be!!!!

He's not alone by any means. I just got a non-running Husky 350 in the shop. Cosmetically, it looked rather good, BUT : One muffler nut was missing completely and the other one was loose. That set up a lean seize that fused the ring with the piston, dropped compression to 80 psi., and the whole top end will have to be rebuilt. The bar was run with way too much pressure and needed either a redress or a replace. I never saw such bar flaring on a 350. I redressed it, but it's near death.

Many people today just do not take care of equipment as they should. It's a fact of life in the USA and elsewhere.
