Guys looking for some info on the differences between the m-tronic saw and the one with carb screws.

I am wanting to try one of the auto tuning saws in a bad way.

I see builders of the normal saw from time to time and would like know what it take to convert one.

So is it just coil, wire harness, and carb?

And a cover with no holes?

I know the new 261 lite is coming to the states but I am too cheap to shell out the cash for a new saw anyway.

I bought a 261 tune up kit? On eBay. I missed out on the saw but got the kit

It has all new OEM carb, sprocket, bearing, air filter, and a little black sensor? Thing.

What else do I need besides a 261?
Will a normal coil work?
Thanks for the info
I searched and couldn't find much

There's a good lookin 261 mtronic in the classifieds right now. I think it's a bit over priced though. To me converting a non auto tune saw seems like more trouble than its worth.

I expect if you can hold on until the new version of the 261 becomes readily available, guys will be dumping the older version for pretty reasonable. Seems to happen everytime a new version of a saw comes out.

I still want one I thought the one in the ads were too much for me as well but they sold.
I posted in the manuals forum the other day trying to get IPLs to see the difference, no response yet there.
Maybe I should get a 550xp
At least the IPL is easily found.

Dont know if this work the same way in US, or if Stihl does the same as JRed did in Norway....
After 2252/2253 came they had nice prices on 2152/2153, like 30% off the normal price, I bought one 2153 ;)

No Stihl U.S. will usually Sit on the new ones until the old stock id gone to avoid taking a loss on it. At least in the mid-west. On the Coast and more timber-dense areas, their mileage may vary.

Stihl Canada had a big sale to unload their older 261C-M saws for $500 CDN last month (which was a screaming deal). No such deal in the US though. The only Stihl saw that ever goes on sale here is the 170/171.

Update: the 261 was on sale in Canada for $599 CDN...

Wow. That is a screaming deal. That's about $375 USD currently. I might have picked up a second one for that price.

Opps, my bad, according to my notes they were $599 CDN on sale, or $500 USD with tax and shipped here when the CDN dollah was 70 cents US. They (Stihl Canada) also had the 461 on sale for $1050 CDN. Do not forget the added really high national and provincial sales taxes in Canada (12% in BC, 15% in Kebbekistan). It was still a screaming deal for those saws though.
