Stihl 088 Crankshaft Repair

[Vintage Engine Repairs]

This 088 is throwing me curveballs left right and centre. The sealing surface is pitted and damaged. I spoke to @Trains who told me about speedi sleeves. My only issue is that the clearances on this seal contact face of the crankshaft is 3.5mm and the sleeve is 8mm wide. Therefore not only did it have to be machined down, I had to install it backwards! This may save you hundreds of dollars in replacing a crank, most of the time, I suppose the speedi sleeve can be installed in its normal orientation, but in extra tight spaces you have to get creative.

Sleeve installed backwards as far as stop
& then Install lip being removed:



Sleeve remaining creating a recess by 0.25mm to avoid interfering with oil pump shoulder.

Nice work. Does the sleeve have to come off with the bearing next time they're replaced?

I see that the sprocket bearing surface is also damaged. Could you shave that down and install one of those sleeves, or aren't they hard enough?

Yes it's a 1 time use, carefully get under it and remove it.

Yeah unfortunately it's hammered. They only work for seals! That would be sweet if they could withstand bearings!
