up for sale is a pretty darn nice Stihl 044 with the artic heated handle option, WCS dogs, the saw is in pretty good condition appearance wise, it will pop off with a prime, the cylinder appears to be made of chineseium guessing by the color of it and the lack of any markings, there is scratches in the plating pretty badly on both intake side and exhaust side, one missing bolt on the cylinder cover near the brake flag, and the exhaust bolts tightened up nicely without stripping.

I have absolutley no idea what this saws reasonable value is worth, I looked for quite a while to try and compare this saw with others and I concluded that there is not enough artic models that come up for sale to get an accurate comparision, with that said I am going to just take reasonable offers on it for a week or so and I will accept the highest offer, but I may take an offer sooner if I feel that its an offer I cannot refuse.

if you have any questions or would like more specific pics I am happy to take more and post them.

as with all my sales we will have to complete the transaction the old fashioned way, I do not have any way to send nor accept any electronic payment methods, its gonna have to be check or money order through the mail, I have completed quite a few sales on this forum using that process and so far everything has been as smooth as glass

it struck me as odd for it to have a plugged decomp, with no hole in the cover to actuate a decomp.

Looks like the early 044 with the fastback air filter and cover. Pre HD filter.

It’s worth removing the recoil and flywheel and look to see what the generator and wires look like. Some of the ones I’ve seen have had all the coating burned off the wire where it had shorted out

I couldnt see any markings on either side of the cylinder. the cylinder bolts appear to be new, or they are just extremley clean.

It likely got rebuilt at some point and the early style 044 top ends were no longer available, so the technician used 440 parts.

Stihl discontinued those early 044 parts pretty quickly.

Or dirt and dust wears the magnet out in the flywheel

can anyone tell by looking at the pics if this is a 10mm or 12mm?
whats does slant fin mean?

tomorrow I will gas it up and see how it runs, and try to test the heat, but I'm nevous because if the heat works good I'm goin to have to keep it.

Fins on top run diagonal on a slant fin. Only way I know to tell for sure if it’s a 10mm or 12 is front of the case under the flywheel cover.

Far as I know it only matters if you're putting a piston kit in it.

I thought the serial# showed when the change over occurred for the crankshaft from 10mm to 12mm.

. Don't know if there was a definitive point or not when it changed. A lot of other parts kind of phased in over time without a definitive point in the serial #.
