up for sale is a running Stihl 038 AV Super, I believe is 100% complete and OEM, 120 psi of compression tested when cold, its hard starting but seems to run and idle somewhat decent, but in my opinion its lacking something, it's the 2nd Stihl Ive ever owned and it just seems to cut like a dog to me, although my experience with stihls in general is very little.

I couldnt find a recent one for sale on here to get a gauge for what I should ask for it so Im thinking $300 for the PHO shipped is a fair starting point to ask, the bar is borderline junk and the chain is also with only about 10% of the cutters left and is due for junk pile as well, if thats too high of a price please let me know and we can talk as I am a motivated seller and I have no use for this saw.

as with all my sales we will have to complete the transaction the old fashioned way, I do not have any way to send nor accept any electronic payment methods, its gonna have to be check or money order through the mail, I have completed about a half dozen sales on this forum using that process and so far everything has been as smooth as glass.

if you would like to see more pics please ask and I will gladly post more THANKS.

PS I cannot find the serial #, if someone knows where its located on these saws please speak up and let me know where to look and I will snap a pic and post it.

only stihl I've ever owned before this was a 311, I used it for not even 1 tank and sold it to the guy who works at the gas station on payments.

I dont have anything against or any negative history with stihl, and I wouldnt mind owning more of them and getting to use them, It's just Im good friends with the local husky dealer and I get good deals and instant service if something goes south

I have a good Magnum top end and nice plastics (top cover, AF cover) for anyone wanting to convert this to a mag.
If i remember correctly the hole pattern on the jug will need to be slotted to do this kinda like building a 044/046 hybrid because the mag has wider spaced in bolts.

I think the super will bolt up a mag cylinder. But I know the regular 038 requires slotting the cylinder.

I think the super will bolt up a mag cylinder. But I know the regular 038 requires slotting the cylinder.

I've done the conversions, first one back in 2008.

You need to slot out the holes in the mag cylinder if starting with a 038 or 038S case . 038 base gasket makes a good template to mark the cylinder for the slots, needs to be centered with the bore.

Stihl shop manual mentions the clutch side of the 038 case may need to be ground to fit a 038S cylinder on a 038 case, even though bolt pattern is the same. Same would be true for a 038M jug. My conversions started with Super cases and I had no problems there.

Will need to grind back a little on cylinder casting where the cylinder screws seat, or the heads will rub on the jug and not thread in straight into the case/cross thread. Also helps to hog out the holes in the cylinder fins for the T-27 torx driver to get at the screw heads.

The Mag ex port is wider but not taller so if using a 038 or 038S muffler need to match up the inner muffler casing. The dual port mufflers work good if you open up both outlets and add more/bigger holes to the inner casing baffle. Some people take the baffle out.

038 carbs are smaller opening/venturi than 038S or 038M. I found the 038S Tilotson ran/tuned about the same as 038M Bing carb. Bing rebuild kits are expensive. Tilotson makes a brand new replacement carb for the 038.
