Stihl 024 to 026 Needs Some TLC

Looks like you have the 026 crank as you thought! Can you throw a timing wheel on it before you disassemble it?

I'm still confused. According to @Tpagel , he couldn't fit an 026 crank in an 024 case. He stated that the case was different. @odin states the case is the same. If the crank is actually a 30mm crank but is set higher in the case, he could still have a 30mm stroke.

Time hasn't permitted me to pull apart one of my 024 non supers yet, but when I do, I will make a thread on cylinder base to squish band depth as well as timing with the 024/024S/026 jug on top of it.

The crank fits in the case.
The angles of throw look extreme to me.

It is the one I posted pics next to a flower pot in another 1121 thread.
In the name of research I will send it to you.

I never had a problem putting an 026 crank in an 024 case, and I converted probably around 16 of them when I was working in the dealership. The owner would buy big lots of saws at live auction and then dump them in my lap to make good runners. The only good part was I had a blank check to buy new parts (he owned both the logging company and the saw shop).

The only differences in the cases that I'm aware of is the front tensioner vs. side tensioner set-up.

From the info provided, why wouldn't you try just deleting the base gasket and a new set of rings?

Before I loaned it out, it ran fine. I decided to rebuild the top end using the standard 024 piston and cylinder. I finished it all today using the old cylinder gasket that looked OK, so I saved it. Hardly any wear on it. Started the engine and it runs great. It cut a few logs like a champ. Compression measured 148 psi. cold and 155 psi. warm.

I noticed that the wear on both the old cylinder and rings was noticeable. Looks like that was enough to sap power and blow smoke. I think I saved this saw and it was worth the effort. Stihl "only" wants about $570 for an MS241 these days with the same size engine, one bar stud, and no outside bumper spike. Then add sales tax.
