Hi all, a friend gave me his older saw and it will fire for a sec if I shoot fuel in the carb, but then dies. Any ideas?

Thanks!

If it's a used saw with unknown past id replace the fuel line and filter as well as the impulse line. Clean and rebuild the carb and then start a process to see if it will run. Pulling the muffler cover would also be on the list to check that the p/c are in good shape.

I do all the above but sometimes it's easier just to replace the carb assuming the engine's compression is still good.. If the engine's compression is a dead puppy, there is nothing that will work before doing a top-end rebuild. Just MHO. Here's one of the four 024 AV's that I converted to an 026 AV:

It can be done. After seven years, this saw still runs with 026 power.

Have you rebuilt the carby if not I think I would start there and
make sure you give it a good clean probably in an ultrasonic cleaner.

As someone else mentioned, check compression first, also pull the muffler and look at the piston, just because it has decent compression doesn't always mean the piston is not damaged. If all of that is good then pressure test the fuel line. The older carbs on the older saws were a lot more forgiving than the newer ones so I would try a crab kit before replacing the carb. If you have the equipment I would also do a leak-down test to check for intake leaks.

Thanks all for the replies! So, compression is at 175lb, replaced fuel line/filter and impulse line. Cleaned spark arrestor. Spark seems good. Saw would start with a bit of fuel shot into carb, but dies. I rebuilt carb and now it won't fire at all and it seemed as though it was flooding. Took the carb apart again and put old metering diaphragm back after realizing the new one was a bit longer. Still won't fire.........I've just started working on chainsaws so every step is a learning experience, but worked on my own cars all my life. I don't have a leak down tester. My memory isn't what it once was and now I'm second guessing myself as to which metering diaphragm was in the Walbro carb originally. I really appreciate the help guys and love the feeling of getting an old saw going that's been sitting.

The order of diaphragm/gasket/cover is opposite for each side of the carburetor. Check to be sure about the metering side.

Tom ( @Vintage Engine Repairs ) has some good vids on carbs. There’s this one, and and another that’s almost 1/2hr it maybe worth watching both ? Or having a looksee on his channel 😉
However most of us don’t have a vacuum pump and get by without one

Thanks for the shoutout and kind words :)

Yes it should fire with a shot down the throat as long as there is spark.
I find if it fires ans stops it most probably a carb problem. If you can get a leak down tester
I take the filter of the fuel line and test there and if it holds preasure that is fine
but could still be a block in the carb.
