That’s why I posted the pic, mufflers aren’t good indicators of tune

Perhaps but they don't hide a poor combusting oil.

I’m guessing it’s a race saw, the short quick cuts don’t allow it to heat up and burn the oil. But it can still be lean.

Also, the amount of fines it eats soak up the oil in the muffler better. Lean tuned race saw on 32:1?

My 6401 after a WOT plug chop. That was tuned to 13,000. It didn’t readily 4 stroke much out of the cut so I fattened it up. But according to plug at 13,000 it seemed for sure to lean. Or am I wrong?

I have been using a tach to verify my ear isn’t hearing the limiter. The 6401 seems happiest at 12,500-12,700 where it makes good power and 4 strokes instantly out of the cut even though the limiter is 13,500.

Sure ran real good at 13,000 though.

Plug color alone can put you in a bad spot if your not careful.

I found tuning saws for firewood they want to be fatter than they do for when I’m logging. Firewood is continuously cutting cut after cut, the saw gets to hotter temperatures. Saw leans out more. Logging in between cuts I’m walking and the saw idles more. Gets a chance to cool down. I can tune them a little leaner safely. Just something I noticed. I use the screen as reference to help tell me how it’s running, but it’s not something I would rely on. I listen to it and the distinct smell of the oil burning when it’s tuned just right. I don’t take the plug out and look at it unless I’m doing maintenance, but its just a reference like the spark screen. Imho at the end of the day, a little fat is always better than a little lean.

This one was getting near pinkish right out of the saw, it started to fade to a red brown by the time the picture was taken. I'm sure it eventually fades to a light brown. Weird though

I’m wondering if the 2 stroke oil can have impact on the tint of the carbon? Not to turn this into a oil thread lol.

It sure does. Additives in the fuel can cause that also so it stands to reason the additives in the oil can as well.

Thats a clean burning just the right amount of ash in your oil for your application at least it looks that way to me.
