You guys split wood so differently over the pond. To me it looks a little dangerous. But you obviously know what you are doing. Lol.
I most always split with a chopping block and lift the rounds onto the chopping block then split with ax. Might take a bit more work, but its the only way I know how. Wood over here in USA is much more dense than the Spruce wood you're splitting.
Have you tried a Gransfors Bruk Splitting Ax?

I use the chopping block too, sometimes . This is more effective for me, 45 years old now and never cut my self in the leg...
The Granfors bruk splitting axe is simular to this one .
This is a Jonsered ...

OK. Good. [emoji106]
You definitely have done that type of splitting a time or 2 before. It was splitting pretty easily too.
It was a 100 years old spruce,.
Back to the, GB one
These heads get stuck in the wood ..
Not a very good axe for splitting . Talking about the splitting axe from Sweden..

I cut a stump off about two or three inches thick to use for a chopping block. I don’t like the chunk sitting up very high. I feel like that takes away from the finish so to speak. If you try to accelerate through the wood You end lower if the block is near the ground. I try to split when the ground and wood is frozen. If that’s the case I do split it before it goes in the truck

A video that I made a couple of weeks ago. Gransfors Bruk splitting maul and splitting ax.
The video shows the chopping block and round atop. I keep wood in front and on the sides so when the wood flies, hopefully it lands on the wood and not on the ground. Lol

I find some Sitka spruce can be a bar steward too split especially when the branches are pinned right through
