That's nice & @4.5lb's it would be a formidable splitting axe. The phantom bevel acts kinda like a bearing limiting the friction area of the bit width as it goes through wood. Keeper fa sure.

Do you think the true temper Kelly previous owner ever oiled the handle lol. That feeling of holding up that Cruiser after all the sweat that's gone into it is what its all about. Here is a $15 hardware hatchet I used for kindling for a few years untill my 6y/o nephew referred to it as 'my axe' so I decided to mirror polish it up with multiple grits 80-2000 followed by 2 different polishing wax bars (green & white). It will go under his Xmas tree once I've re-hung it with a little longer handle.View attachment 99198

Wow you made that $15 hatchet look like $200, beautiful work. And you’re 100% correct about the satisfaction in making something from nothing. I’m hooked and on the lookout for axes everywhere now.

Anyone got some tips for seasoning wood properly? Got an itch to make my own handles, I blame this thread. Also have you guys seen a Collins like this before?

I’ve been seasoning my handles once they’re shaved to rough shape by bringing them in the house for about 2 weeks. Once a day I put a light sheen of water on it so the outside doesn’t dry too fast. I’m sure there are better more scientific ways but with the wood stove going it’s been working well. You’ll enjoy making your handle, this thread gave me the itch too, I just started doing this a little over a month ago.

Here is a couple I have been working on. When I put handle in I glued the wedge let it dry and trimmed it off about just above head then drove metal wedges.
Axe head is a R King, I read somewhere it was made by Collins I’m not sure. I think it is about 4lbs.

I got my cruiser done, best handle I’ve made by a mile. The head fit is tighter than a nuns (well, you know) and the length feels great. It’s my new favorite axe. Now I’m conflicted on whether to burn the handle or not.

I think it is a 5lbs. Measures 7 inches from bit to poll.

Went too the local agricultural store yesterday to get some nails and bolts etc
And he had this small axe for sale $20 it’s a nice axe 12” handle 1 1/4lb
Couldn’t resist bought a couple

That’s an old axe, very cool looking. Looks like a bigger version of my Bluegrass axe

It was Minwax Sodona Red. Reminds me somewhat of the plum hammer handle color.

Yes it does and that’s why I asked. I have a Plumb single bit with the original red handle I and really like the color.
