I recently got a shindaiwa trimmer given to me. It is in need of an air cleaner assembly and a string guard and possibly a string head. I believe the model is a t230. Anyone have any parts for these things kicking around? Also is this thing even worth fixing? May just end up in the scrap heap

They make great trimmers. Mine is around 20yrs old, runs great, only thing I've done to it is replace the string head, it needs it again too.
Many guys run trimmers without the guard, much like running a saw without a break, you'll need to understand what causes objects to fly back at you. As for the other parts, you should be able to find everything online.

What do you suggest for a replacement string head do you use bump head or pre cut?

I use a pre cut style with heavy line.
Unfortunately I don't remember the brand, I don't do much trimming these days since I'm not doing lawn care professionally these days. But I need to find another one before next summer, mine is pretty far gone.
