I have better luck when using the Tri corner files going from outside-in (especially on .404). I had a cutting partner in the 90's who used the Oberg files from inside-out and his saws seemed to cut fine. A lot of it is personal preference and most users won't notice much of a difference on a work chain.

On Stihl RSL 3/8, I prefer the 6 sided files, as the triangular ones dig in to the links on the opposite side too much.

I go outside in, and try to stick to the factory angle.
