I normally don't partake in internet diagnosis, because it's just guessing without it being in your hands,.....but....this seems like either a bad casting batch/mix or the cylinder was dropped at some point.

People forget and a cursory glance may have gotten it filed in the "no harm, no foul" RAM.

Do you torque cylinders Scott? I would guess yes and around 7.5 ftlbs/90 inlbs......

does anyone?

Seeing as Scott asked in the second vidja he made and the possibility of any other new evidence being found, one theory could be possible that there's a link between the broken fin and the broken base. They do have the relationship of an earlier partial break and while not probable, it would not be impossible for the saw to fall/drop on something just right to cause such an affliction as that area of the cylinder is somewhat exposed. Again, just a theory, surely Scott will keep poking around on this and get it whittled down after all the evidence is in and his CSI investigation comes to a conclusion.

They usually will not fire when that happens.
Would have been nicer if it just stuffed itself and a simple carburetor repair taken care of it, instead of breaking the top cover along with all four corners of the cylinder base. I took everything off of one of my saws and put humpty-dumpty back together again.
I guess sometimes what should be and what is be, are two different things when... chit happens, even on a simple saw from the early 70's.

Fuel mix leaked into the crankcase from a leaking needle and seat in the carburetor, it fired up and next revolution went pop.
Had something similar on a 2 cyl Kohler Courage on a Husq zero turn mower. Luckily blew the head gasket instead of f-bar ing the head. Not sure whether that can happen on a single cylinder or not. Blew my mind as I'd never heard of it before, and couldn't quite wrap my head around why there was a steady stream of raw fuel coming out the exhaust!

When I was young, had a friend park his 440 'cuda on an incline facing downhill in the evening, went out in the morning to start it up and it went gawerp as the motor barely rolled over and then poof up in flames. By the time he got it extinguished a lot on it was burnt up. He was able to repair and repaint it thankfully.
Some days you're the windshield and some days you're the bug.
