As a break from arguing about oil, let's talk sealants.

Who uses a sealant on crankcase gaskets?

Base gaskets?

Intake boots?

I seem to be in the minority with Right Stuff (Permatex). I’ve used it fairly extensively and have never had a problem. I’d be slow to put sealant on both sides of a crankcase gasket though; it might allow the gasket to push out of place.

Used Motoseal, loctite of some variety, got Reinzoseal now and have used it twice. Vintage motorcycle restoration guy recommended it. It's the least messy of the three, will know how hard it is to remove later this week.

I always put a very thin layer of motoseal on both sides of crankcase gaskets. I’m sure it’s not necessary but I figure that everything was perfect when they were assembled the first time so after years of hard service and oil on every surface, a little bit of sealant isn’t going to hurt

I use aviation form-a-gasket (Permatex) for gaskets (both sides), I think I have the red permatex I use with clamshells.

I noticed the carb body goes straight to the manifold, no gasket, on this 026 I'm building. Tempted to put sealer there.
If you have the elbow connector and sleeve (in good condition) you should not need any sealant. I have had and worked on a bunch of these style saws and if those parts are in good condition without any wood bits or dirt between them and the carb, the pressure of the carb against them will create a tight seal.

That settles that. I've heard base gaskets tend to leak on 026s. Will sealant + gasket prevent that?

You might try the aviation form-a-gasket, if you goof, its cleans up easy, if you need to take the saw apart in the future it helps prevent the gasket from sticking and used on both sides of the gasket will help to fill in any unevenness...

I guess I haven’t heard that 026 base gaskets leak. But when I do use a base gasket, it always gets a thin layer of motoseal on both sides. Seen too many three series huskies with the gasket sucked into the transfer ports causing a leak

News to me.

I use a little white Dirko on Stihl case gaskets because it’s cheap insurance and it’s white, so it doesn’t look terrible. I generally put on nitrile gloves, put a dab in my palm, then rub a smear of it on the whole gasket with the index finger and thumb. Very little is needed , if at all.

Sometimes powder coating will affect a nice square case half edge. @Glock37 always recommends cleaning up the mating surfaces of the case halves on a piece of sand paper on a flat surface. If I don’t feel like doing that, I use sealant. If they are factory edges and I am using an oem gasket, I use no sealant and never had one leak.

Honda Bond HT.

I use it sparingly but everywhere. From the filter base to the cylinder base, not on the exhaust side. I don’t like problems, don’t mind wasting time avoiding wasting time.

The G366Pro didn’t seal the snorkel worth a *s-word. So I put *s-word there too. An O-ring, shouldn’t, shouldn’t have had to, but I wasn’t about to let it suck fines.

Had a 372 clamp fail on a saw I built. Never knew it until I went back in.
The Honda Bond did its job, had to work a second just to get the boot off.
Nothing wrong with a belt and suspenders

-Hondabond on case halves
-High Temp Permatex ( orange ) on a base gasket delete. Orange is the only one I have found to imply its brake clean resistant.

OE base gaskets get a skin and dry on one side and wet install on the other side. Wet on both side can lead to the gasket pushing in/out when torqued. Slippage happens more so on O-ring silicone gaskets and paper ones with factory silicone bead on them. I cant say I have never come across this type of gasket on a smell engine though.
