I got this 262 case and handle from somebody a long time ago. I've got a lot of 262 parts so I put a saw together the other day. P&I'd it and found the pto side seal leaking. No big deal, put another one in. Now holds pressure and vacuum. Checked for spark, it's got some pretty good spark. Flywheel key is intact and gapped correctly. Set the carb out at 1 turn each. Filled it up with fuel and no go. So, I put fuel down the hole to see if it would turn over, not a peep. Hmm mm. Now I'm not a rookie and I've built many a saw but this is the first saw that I've seen that holds p&v and I haven't been able to turn it over. I'm going over this thing in my mind and I come up blank. Anybody got any idea of what could be happening. Maybe I think it's got good spark and it doesn't think so? This has really got me baffled....

if a coil is weak it can fire in open air but not fire off a compressed air gas mix. Your lead to from coil to plug could have an issue that you cant see it may only work at one angle. if the spring end that goes to the spark plug is torn off it may rest in the right spot but not be in the right spot when twisted to put on the plug. The end in the boot that goes on the plug can get twisted and not make contact. I assume you have compression, we know you have fuel last thing is spark right?

Yup.

I tested the coil by just taking the spark plug out and connecting it to the cylinder, like I always do. Wouldn't be the first time a coil has fooled me...

What kind of spark are you getting when you test it? Blue? Bright yellow? Yellowish orange?

I had one where the plug wire had set against the cylinder fin and melted a little slot for strategic grounding. It was hard to see with it on the saw. Showed great spark on the plug and then when pulled close to the cylinder with the plug installed it randomly stopped or wouldn't start at all.

I had one too where the plug wire was grounding out. This one everything SEEMS fine but evidently isnt

The other weird one that I'm sure doesn't apply in this case was on more than one 257/262 I've seen the coil ground with fines packed around the coil. I've also seen old stop switches that ground no matter the position but not consistently. I've also had a couple that barely poped and then flooded with a couple of extra pulls on the choke. I'd pull the stop switch wire at the coil for testing.

Tom do you have another compatible saw that runs and you can swap parts between?

Yup, got 3 of them. Just put another coil on it. We'll see if that does it.
