...which is the complete opposite from the IPL, the 281/288 shares the same as the 394. I'm more cornfused than when I started.

Well... I can say with certainty that last year I ordered the same OEM clutch for a 288 and 395 and didn't need any pipe wrenches or anything like that to install on either.
I have a 288, 390, and 395 here to compare, but not a 394 at the moment.

Digging around tells me that 281 - 3120 including the 2100 all have a clutch that will interchange.

394 - 395 should interchange.

IPLs do show different part numbers, but that is probably to do with revisions rather than fitment.

I just checked a 394 crank against a 395 - both OEM cranks. Clutch threads are the same and the clutches do not have an external clutch nut.

They have a clutch "nut" that is integral and cast into the clutch spider.

Yeah, there’s a single long spring type (what came on the 281/288/probably 394) and the more modern three spring getup (395, etc). They will interchange, and the later clutch is considered an upgrade for the older saws.

Yet the plot thickens, if you order a Hyway clutch it fits all these - Husqvarna 181, 281, 288, 390, 394, 395.
