Reinstalling clutch

Hello all used a inpact to remove the clutch from my saw and now im ready to reinstall it. Do I burb it back on with the impact or go hand tight. Thanks

Hand tight works just put it in a log for a second right after starting. Or do it with the impact. Either way works.

I use an impact to reinstall them. I used to use a piston lock and ratchet but I found the impact to be more reliable. Just make sure you pull the rope out and then turn the engine back against compression so you aren't tightening against the flywheel/recoil--you can loosen the flywheel and shear the key if you get overzealous about tightening the clutch with an impact with only the starter rope holding it (if you're working on a Stihl this is not an issue).

Torque to spec if possible. Have had a few things come loose ‘impact tight’. Don’t reinstall with starter recoil installed

Don't forget to put the clutch cover back on when testing the saw, don't want a clutch to come loose and spin off of the saw at great speeds and go shooting all over the workshop!! Safety first!!

Unless you are using a multi-speed/torque, 1/4" impact that you can dial down as needed, just use a piece of pull rope in the plug hole and hand tighten.

I hand tighten

There are a few ways to get things tight, but the saw, in theory will tighten the clutch down as it’s turning in the “tightening direction”.
-Hitting the chain brake after she’s running for the 1st sec will do it.
-Holding on to and turning the FW with a bare hand and letting the chain brake hold the clutch has always been enough for my personal saws.
-You can make a piston stop via a dowel tapped into an old spark plug once the center electrode is busted out. 180 DTC is the best dowel length for the least stress on the rotating assembly.

Exploding a clutch in the shop is a rite of passage. That moment when you realize you still have both eye's is priceless. Also you should never put anything back together with an impact.

I have done this (torquing using piston stop) and had them come loose. But each person needs to figure out what works for them. And yes, it will probably take a loose clutch or two to figure it out.

I honestly never do more than spin it on by hand but all mine are inboard clutches.

I have always just tightened them as much as I could with the various clutch tools I have which are not great. Have not had one come off but I am sure I could get them a little tighter…

What are we talking here Clutch or Flywheel as you stated at the start it looks
like clutch. Either one I just take them up with a rattle gun but in saying that
have had one come off and is not pleasant spending half a day looking for
all the bits. So yes put the cover back on for safety reasons.
