Recommend me a gasket material

I have a couple old machines to put together and I am going to need to cut the case gaskets. I am looking for gasket material suggestions.

I use Felpro gasket material. You can get it at automotive stores, but usually get a better deal on-line. They come in flat sheets and rolls. Here is an example you can get from AutoZone:

You can get different thicknesses depending on where the gasket is going. I don't think this material would work well for an exhaust gasket, but I have used it to cut carb gaskets, and various case gaskets for many of my saws.

Great post, I use similar stuff from Napa. I have used that stuff on mufflers, it will work fine, I have never had an issue. but it helps to make sure the muffler is free flowing....

Depending on thickness and purpose I have used manilla folders, and brown paper bags for gaskets. I have also used thin aluminum cans.

Good to know, I just assumed (we know where that gets you...) from the muffler gaskets out now being a different material than the other gaskets that the regular material would not hold up. I guess I can make one up and give it a try and check on it every so often to see how it is holding up.

How long do the manila folder gaskets last? I have a saw that looks like it had one that thin for the cylinder gasket, but it was almost 80 years old and had pretty much disintegrated.

I would use the Felpro gasket paper as @hacskaroly mentioned and maybe fortify it with HT Dirko or the newer Permatex high-heat gasket dressing (I think they have a product now that's good to 750f).

Local vintage motorcycle restorer swears by this stuff. Says it's the only thing he's found to keep tailpipes sealed to the cylinder on certain makes. Haven't used it yet but will soon.

For exhaust gaskets I bought Mr gasket brand header gasket material. Came in 12” or so square sheets, looks like black felt and has a metal core. Otherwise just rolls of black or cork gasket material for the rest depending what’s needed.

This is it, has a felt looking face made from graphite and it’s thicker to seal some minor imperfections

I like the look of that. I'm doing some pioneers and the reed blocks are really taking some attention to get sealed reliably. The oem intake gaskets seem to be made from a material that is thicker and softer, more conforming than the felpro stuff. I have been trying out a layer of 1184 to help but it seems like the recipe was changed and, although it is less annoyingly stringy now, I am not sure it is as effective. I'm going to see how the Dirko performs.

Interface N-8090. The husky chainsaw case gasket use them I believed. Good stuff.

I've used Permatex Moto-Seal before with good results, especially if the mating surfaces aren't perfect.

I’ve got a beer can exhaust gasket on my husky 55. For exhaust work an old can does actually work well.

For case gaskets I’ve only had experience with felpro. Felpro is huge in the automotive industry for good reason. They make good quality gaskets. The other stuff fellas have mentioned I have no experience with but I would grab felpro
