What would you fellas recommend?

Often I have a hard time looking thru bifocals checking for spark. Try to get a good ground, pull the starter rope and watch the plug gap.

I’d like one the connects between the plug lead and the plug that lights up. For sure one that will allow the saw to run. Mostly to see if the spark goes away.

NAPA sells a good one that works great, looks like a spark plug with a heavy made clip on the side, use it at work also.

A word on the Stihl model: I'd love one if it weren't for the price tag. I've seen it show a (correct) no-spark condition, when others showed spark.

I've got a little Snap on neon tester .The spark test is okay and it works .However having gone through a factory course put on by Briggs and Stratton they stressed that often this could damage their ignition systems .However having said that I still spark test them because old habits die hard . After that again I've found some really odd stuff on various types of ignition systems .For example one weak magnet on a weed wacker flywheel .Stroked it with a rare earth magnet which temporarily fixed it .On that I can explain what is was,the magnet lost it's permeability but why it happen I have not a clue .

I have a couple of the stens ones. They work fine and let the engine run. Wont stress test the ignition system though. You need a gap type tester for that. Open your plug gap to about .050" and use the neon inline tester to do a psudo stress test. Saw ignition should be able to run at .050

Picked this one up at NAPA, Mac Tools also have them. If it don't jump the gap, well you have a problem. Can also be used with it installed on a running engine to see it spark drops off when hunting a skip.

I had two cheapie versions of those that both ended up in the trash from the clips breaking off. And that type can't be used with a single cylinder engine that you want to do a running test on. Got this one from Auto Zone or Advance (or one of the other ones) and haven't looked back. Bulb and parts are serviceable. Just wish I could remember where I got it now! Good quality for one of those types of auto parts stores. Think it was around $15.
