Got a 9.5 johnson goin on it. Hope it still runs. Hasn't ran since 2014 moose hunting trip.

Took my Yukon in for state inspection and the dealer told me they couldn't pass it because ther rear pads were gone and needed replacement. They "measured 0 mm". I was pissed because I just had the rims of this spring to pt summer tires on and knew there was plenty of pad. They were happy to offer new rear pads for $350. Mind you I just had them fix my A/C which was nearly $600...

I told them I would pick it up and di ther pads myself. Here's the drivers read pads. Doesnt look like "0mm" to me!

I measure 1/8" to the wear bar. :cursing2:

Im not a certified GM mechanic. Are these guys trying to make a quick buck @redline4?

This is why I have little faith in dealers.

1/8" is roughly 3mm. I think new they are 8mm?
There is also the fact that the squealer tabs are usually touching with about 1.5mm left.
We dont have state certs here.
Im not sure what is the minimum requirement for you.

Based off what I can see on the edges of the backers, it looks like they are beginning to hang up in the bracket, which will cause them to go quick.

Myself, I would tell a customer at 3mm you do have some brake life left, but also wouldnt be throwing money away by replacing either.

On my own vehicles, because I get to make the decisions, I replace things well before many customers when given the option. I've *s-wordcanned tires that many would run another 6,000 miles.
Why? Because it's all that holds my wife and kids on the road.

I doubt any of this helped, but thats about all I have.

Edit: looked at pic again. 1/8" to squealer tab? Tab tooks even with the backer in pic, so its either illusion or tab is bent.

Ya there is more than 0mm for sure! But the rust could be hanging the pads up in the future.

Some shops suck too, I got new tires on a rig I had just bought.....one of the guys came to me and told me my brakes were super bad, and I need to replace them...I was laughing inside, but played dumb, it comes naturally....so oh wow really? Can you show me...um sure he says, so we go out and take a look, he points and says they look thin! I say ok, 5/16 is thin, he says ya, the looked brand new still had all of the paint on them. I said ok, so are you going to warranty them out? He said what? Ya warranty them out, you guys install them less than 5000 miles ago! Haha! He said oh, well I guess they aren’t that bad! I couldn’t believe they were that bad, I had the paperwork from when and how many miles where on it, and they looked brand new! I was pissed!

That stuff happens everywhere unfortunately. In all fields too. Doesn't make it right though.

In Missouri to fail Safety inspection it is below 1/32" on a bonded pad and below 5/32" on a rivited pad. Front or rear.

Shoes are less than 1/32" bonded or less than 1/32 above the rivit head on rivited shoes.

Key word here is below. 1/32" passes!

In Missouri the State Highway patrol has overview on inspection stations. If those pads came off my failed vehicle there is an office 16 miles from my home that I go by/near a few times a week. Oh yeah, gotta go ask where the state issued vin goes on a homeaid trailer. But thats just me

Either side? Built a dunebuggy in the 80's and had to place drivers side inside (toward driver) the verticle tube on that design is why I ask. They are the most intelligent, restrained LEO's who will take no sh☆t and are trained exceptional. Give em no *s-word and things go so well!

Its 1/8" to the squealer. It's not bent. The pair of pads are together. I'm using the one as a flat reference like it would be sitting on the rotor.

The part that burns my ass is that they said there was no pad left. I totally get changing out things when when they are getting close. These pads are getting close, I wouldn't disagree with that but if the state inspection says >1mm is pass and I'm at 3mm then I pass. Any mechanic worth his salt would say "2mm left before they fail inspection, i can change them for you now at $x or later at your convenience" then I would be grateful for that kind of service. And in would put it off for 3 more months. I'd go buy the pads and put them in in a week or two.

Yes 8mm new on rear and 11mm on front I believe.
