I never have developed a repeatable method for butt joints. Not too shabby at everything else.
I take a sharp knife and V them out, prefill with hot mud, then just tape as usual. You really have to feather them out pretty wide if you want them to look good. Or you can skim coat the entire wall, but that’s a lot of extra work.I never have developed a repeatable method for butt joints. Not too shabby at everything else.

Don't be hating.
That's what I've always had to go back and do.feather them out pretty wide.![]()
My brother inspected a building project in Johnson county KS several years ago. Drywaller was prepping a wall and they got to talking. The wall was 100 ft long 12 ft tall no windows, doors, corners or openings was to be finished High gloss black automotive. perfect finish expected. Brother remarked that this was a serious challenge . Drywaller merely said "I'm not Cheap" Brother brings it up once in a while.I take a sharp knife and V them out, prefill with hot mud, then just tape as usual. I’ve also seen people splice the butts together between the studs/joists & use tapered boards to pull the ends back, which sort of creates a tapered joint.
