I take a sharp knife and V them out, prefill with hot mud, then just tape as usual. You really have to feather them out pretty wide if you want them to look good. Or you can skim coat the entire wall, but that’s a lot of extra work.
I’ve also seen people splice the butts together between the studs/joists & use tapered boards to pull the ends back, which sort of creates a tapered joint.
