395 didn't need much grinding on the inside, so I figured I'd grind some on the outside

Is it just me or is a plane with a previously dead battery flying off into the sunset kinda scary. What if the charging system was the cause of said dead battery?Jump started a plane a few years ago,,, View attachment 324965 View attachment 324966

Yes, unless like I said the charging system is malfunctioning and it quits midair after the voltage drops from the malfunction. When you jump start you effectively charge a dead battery. If the charging system is bad it will continue to run until the battery drops below the voltage required for it to run then it just quits. What your saying will work assuming someone left the lights on and it's a weak battery that will accept a charge. If it's a bad battery even with a good charging system you shouldn't be using it with a bad battery as doing that will destroy your charging system because it can't charge a bad battery which causes heat because there's nowhere for the voltage to go and blows out your charging system which will again cause the motor to stop.magneto fired
batt just starts it
What your saying is if the plane had a large pull start like a chainsaw, it would start and stay running like a chainsaw regardless if there is a chaging system or even a battery? No wonder more planes don't crash.magneto fired

Haven't you seen the war movies where the guys flip the props on the fighter planes to start them up?What your saying is if the plane had a large pull start like a chainsaw, it would start and stay running like a chainsaw regardless if there is a charging system or even a battery? No wonder more planes don't crash.

If the battery has expired, no amount of engine running will charge it. Also, it could destroy the alternator if the battery's failure mode included an internal short. This sets up a potential chain of failure where the avionics, lights, and electric flaps are inoperable. Night? Short runway? No way to broadcast MayDay? (Bold pilots don't become old pilots.)
