I've heard it called lighter knot, pitch pine, rich pine, and fat wood, Most everyone around here just says fat lighter. Another great source for this is catfaces from the turpentine era.Some old timers here call it "lighter knot". Your assessment is spot on. They use it to start fires.

He really thought them grade 8 bolts would hold. Granted they are not designed for that kind of usage.
