Hello, I have an old log splitter I bought last year and the pump got really slow but still splits. I didn't do research and bought a 16gpm pump from "Rugged Made" and it made a lot of noise. Customer service told me it has too much flow for my splitter because my reservoir is only 3 gallons (it's built into the frame) and it's likely that air is getting in or it's overheating and causing friction inside the pump. He said my reservoir has to be at least half the gpm of the pump in gallons. He suggested adding a reservoir but the way the splitter was built there isn't really a convenient place to put one. Other than the noise it performed the same as my old pump. If I get a 5gpm or 6gpm pump will it still be comparable in performance? I'm trying not to waste more money on the wrong part. My splitter has a 4" x 24" cylinder, 9hp engine and 3 gallon reservoir. I have no idea what the old pump was for gpm but it worked fine before it got slow. If a 5 or 6gpm pump would make it really slow then I'd just throw the old one on instead.

Thanks, Tim

I have a wallenstein that came with a 4.5” cylinder and a 16gpm pump. Only about 4 gallon reservoir (which I’m not crazy about but works fine). 10hp motor. If the pump is whining, there’s a screen in the tank on the end of the suction line that’s maybe plugged. Or the filter needs replaced
