Hi guys, my buddy and I were out cutting last couple of weekends with a few of our saws.
026, 036, 361 and 362. Both newer saws have "peakier" powerbands and do not stomp all over the 036 like we initially expected them to. Nice thing about the old school saws is that you can definitely lean on them more than the 361 or 362. I've learned to just drive with a gentle touch on my 361, however my buddy can't stand the on/off power of his 362 vs 036. So now he wants his 362 ported in the hopes of getting some low end grunt out of this thing. Will that be the case?
All three saws running 24" bars buried in oak - and they do pull surprisingly well considering these are mid sized saws at best.
I know the typical answer will be get a 70+cc saw, but that is not an option - this latest 362 purchase is already a secret from his wife - he wants to make that 362 a grunter like his 036 - Thanks for any info!!

Really depends on the porter doing the job, it can range anywhere from a most definite yes to a no and all in-between.
Talk to some different ones and ask what they can do specifically for you.

Mtronic 362 or carb? Opening the muffler a bit and advance the timing a bit even helps a noticeable amount if he wants to start there all what he’s looking for. Having all those saws that are in the same class and using 24” bars on oak? Yes a 462 would be more preferable for 24” bars in hardwood. Could have had a nice shape used 044/046 for the cost of a 362.

362 is mtronic, saw is a year old with little use.......
we actually had a 462 out there!!! and the crazy thing is we weren't blown away by it, sure it had more nut than the 361 and 362, but not THAT much more.....and it is BUZZY compared to the 361/2 which was a huge turnoff for my buddy.....

Like i said, the 462 definitely had more, but it wasn't mindblowing like we were led to believe....yes, the 036 is definitely buzzy compared to the newer saws, but the main question at hand for him is, can a port job give him the low end grunt of the 036. He will be contacting some porters in the next few days.....

It can yes. The couple ported 362’s I ran had low end grunt to them. Would they beat a ported 036 in that area...:confundio1:...but it’s doable to add some grunt.

I wasn’t blown away by the stock 462 either...for what it’s worth.

The short answer is NO.

The dual port saws feel gruntier. Like a 394 vs a 395. Ask @Backtroller about his 034S vs 361. The 036 feels faster but isn’t.

I like grunt too. I’d say he should have his 036 ported. A 361 will beat an 036 ported, but only at twice the cost.

I’m sure it will pull it but the oiler is designed for up to 25”.

I found a stock Echo 590 (half the cost) cuts faster than a 362 because of the low end torque it has. I'm sure the 362 makes more high end power if you can find a way to use it.

I'm of the belief that porting can increase the low end torque if done properly. Just tell the porter you want low end torque, and they should know what to do. It may not turn out as torqy as other saws of its class, but it can be improved.

I do believe you can add some mid range but not much down low. The light weight 361 and 362 crank only makes power up top imo. Do you really need a 24" bar? on that saw... most don't. It easily cuts 27" rounds with a little know how even 28" or bigger.

If your aiming to run it a bit rich on fuel and with only a 24 or 28" bar don't advance the ignition timing imo. Most I've ported wanted to go with less not more ignition lead running the 28" bar with a 460R pump. Full skip chain helps. A lot more needs to be done with the 361 to get enough air flow into the saw imo. Have my own recipe for that. Still using these saws regularly here when not milling or climbing.
