If you think out the understory it takes care of that issue. The biggest problem with a lot of the thinning I’ve been around on government style projects is its basal area based so it really doesn’t incentivize understory thinning its about a number that can change with anyone’s eye. Most of the thinning that’s done on private is based on the amount of light/how many sides are open or trees per acre with crop tree release in Doug fir.Also the wildfires clean out the under growth that is taking away the water from the timber.
Most people think fire is bad for the forest. Sometimes it's good.
