Rope is the old school, nothing wrong with rope/starter cord. It's soft and spreads the load. Nobody would know anyone's been in there before with rope

I also like rope. I repaired 2 saws for people that had taken them to the shop and they punched holes through the pistons with a stop. Probably rolled back a hair and then hit it with an impact wrench. Or had the wrench set the wrong way. Either way, a rope won't destroy a piston.

If the plug projects too far down inside the cylinder head, you are likely in real trouble. If it's too short, surprisingly the engine will probably still run with it. I have even seen plugs in cylinders cross threaded that don't even seat the plug all the way down and the engine will still run if the plug is screwed in tight.

An impact gun should never be used with a piston stop. For one thing, it doesn't require one. The impact of the gun will loosen the clutch even if the plug is out. Doesn't make any difference as I've done it both ways countless times. I've never used the rope method or a piston stop on any chainsaw. Just my little 3/8" air powered butterfly impact.

I have never had an issue with a piston stop. Thread it all the way in so you don't get the massive increase in leverage by being closer to TDC... Think of a reloading press...the last little tiny bit of the pull of the lever increases pressure immensely as the cantilever cams over. And don't use an impact with a piston stop...

AFAIC there is only one use for a metal piston stop: Tried to think of a good use NADA!
