I didn’t read this whole thread but does anyone know of a big dog source or swap for a 550?

Awesome, thanks. Is it obvious on the inner dog which hole should be massaged, ie lower or upper, to make it all line up to the crankcase profile?

This is great news to me coz i have a 372 full wrap and big dogs on the way, so i'm hoping to be able to daisy chain: big dogs to 372, std 372 dogs to 359, 359 inner dog to 346 inner and try and weld a tag on another for the c/c side. :) The 262 better not pout while i come up with a plan for it.....
The inner dog took a lot more work than the outer on my 357. Had to completely change the profile of it where it meets the crank case. I would recommend getting the outer mounted on the cover then working on the inner so you can align them properly.

I used 272 dogs on my 262, took much less work than my 357 it I recall correctly. Very good size for the saw much like 372 smalls on the 357, not ridiculously oversized for the 262. I’ll snap a pic sometime today. Factory 272 doubles are still available for $20.

Don’t know how many of you seen these but this is OEM for the 026:D. As I said once before, it’s silly ,I know. 00D40A79-EB8B-418D-AC6A-1D344EC6F03F.jpeg671FFC5D-1916-4CCA-B97D-9F5B05FCED02.jpeg

Comparison of Dolmar PS-64xx/73xx/79xx (Makita DCS64xx/73xx/79xx & EA64xx/73xx79xx) spikes, all OEM , left to right:
- small European style
- US style 1 (NLA)
- US style 2

Dolmar PS-64-73-79xx spikes (3).JPG

There is a US style 3 which looks like the US style 2 but features shorter spikes.
Somehow it keeps evading broader usage and seems to be hard to source.

Fitted up my recently imported NOS 262 outer spike today.
Thought I would add a retaining bolt to save searching for the spike at an inopportune moment, but manyona that steel is tough!!
Anyone got some advice on the best way to drill through this stuff? I have a few more other ones to improve.

Use a small burr to break through and get close to right size... then a drill bit to finish and make it look neat. Unless of course a guy has expensive drill bits that actually are able to drill through hardened steel.

^^-- what he said --^^

Also, Solid-Carbide drill bits and a drill press FTW.

So I found some time today to play the bucking spike shuffle game.
Following @XP_Slinger advice I grafted some 372 std size duals onto my 359.
Outer required removing steel to unmask the adjustment slot and 'bump' on the cover. Stud holes lined up without any help.
Having set the spike location with the outer I then overlayed the 359 and 372 inners and did what ever was necessary to swap them. This involved welding up original 372 mounting holes (don't weld the larger hole like I did) and filing material away until the spike tips matched inner and outer and there was enough material to drill the 5.5mm mounting holes. For this I clamped the two spikes together as a guide and drilled through using a cobalt bit and some Tap Magic on a very slow speed drill press.
Quick tidy up with a flap disc on the angle grinder and a clone 372 roller and she's done.
Also fashioned a bit of 3mm alloy flat bar into a washer to replace the std chain catcher that mounts through the AV spring.
