Is it worth shopping pawn shops to find the better saws? Better meaning not consumer models. Still thinking about getting a saw larger than my 362 and used might be smart for my first 'big' saw. If you find, what do suggest to see if it's worthy? I bought a used clunker at an estate sale after cranking it and it ran fine. Got it home, it goes dead in a cut! Should I take a big log to cut, lol?

You can have pretty good luck in pawn shops if you shop carefully. Some shops are ok and some are not. Look for shops that price items reasonably and are willing to negotiate.

I have a shop in my local area that prices every saw they receive super high - I don't even bother with them. Another shop I go to that's not really local but I pass by it on the way
to my mom's is reasonable and they'll barter. I inspect the saws very carefully and negotiate based on the fact that some repairs may be needed. Shopping for saws isn't any
different than shopping for most other tools.

Any time you pick up something used it's a gamble. Personally I wouldn't buy from a pawn shop unless a) I was familiar enough with a saw to make a pretty good evaluation of it's condition or b) it was priced to where paying for some repairs wouldn't put me upside down. Both conditions require a working knowledge of saws.

The one you have that dies in the cut could just need a carb screen cleaned.

I hit up 3 or 4 pawn shops regularly. I have bought 5 saws all from the same shop. He is the one that usually gets the better saws in and is most comcenered with positive cash flow. He keeps my number and let's me know when a decent saw comes in. He knows ill have cash in hand and he gives me killer deals when I show up. It pays to build a relationship with a shop like that.

I think it mostly depends on location. I always look at the saws when I go to a pawn shop to look at guns. Around here all you normally see are poulans and Stihl and husky homeowner saws. I'm sure they get goods saws occasionally, but it's a case of being there at the right time.

Often if you can find a friendly dealer that will let things go cheap from the "Dead " pile .I've ressurected at least 6 Stihl's I can remember .One was a 200T they thought spit a rod .$20 .It was the pin from the brake that managed to get stuck in the fly wheel magnet .Pawn shops most times from my experience are rip off artists for just nearly everything .

Not many pawn shops around here. I’ve built a relationship with my local dealer where when I show up he throws me his keys to the “junk shed”. I’ve pulled lots of good saws out of there.

Thats the way to do it there. I buy all my parts for side work from my dealer and pay cash. They like that! Take them doughnuts randomly, candy for holidays and such. Randomly they give me steep discounts on things. Being a human and treating people like humans will get you further in life than ordering everything from a robot online.

There are several Stihl dealers within a 20 mile range here but they aren't all the same .I deal with the largest Toro/Wheelhorse dealership in the USA .They order parts twice weekly from the jobber in Cincinnati so I never have to wait on parts .As a dealer they cannot modify saws but I can which leads to long winded conversations at time .
