Hi folks.

I have this old top handle Stihl that I was given for nothing.

Can anyone help me with a model ID?

It runs but there is something wrong with the throttle trigger. I am thinking of giving it a birthday.

I am thinking of doing a bit of a restore job on it.

Probably not worth anything but will be fun.

Hard to say- those came out in '63 I think, and were produced for the North American market through around 1980-81 I believe. They were still produced through the 80's for other markets.

Judging by the appearance of yours, I'm guessing around the mid 70's. A big factor would be which ignition and flywheel it has.

What sort of year/era are we looking at here?

The 08 came out in 1963 and the 08S in 1965.

A funny thing with the 08S is that a version of the model was made by Stihl in Brazil until recently, despite the design really was outdated by 1970 or so. :)

A 56cc Top Handle running .404........the only thing crazier, in my opinion, is the 07S with its 75cc's. Back when these were new, there must have been gigantic brush and limbs that needed to be cut.........o_O

Yes, a really silly design, and the Husky 65 and Jonsereds 62/621 were much superior designs appearing just a few years later.

And men with big limbs and strong backs to lug them around all day long...

And real men to run them. Of course that was when we knew what bathroom we were supposed to use...

I've owned a couple 08's including an early one with the capped transfers, I always figured Stihl designed this model with the intentions of it being produced as a demo saw as well, which would explain the awkward design of the 08/08s, but they run pretty well and is most likely why Stihl built the s-10 around the 08 power head.....ts_08.jpg 20140923195138qtmop0yrk7.jpg

It is a pretty groovy old saw and I dont currently have a top handle saw in the stable.

It cost me nothing but isn't likely to make me any money either, so I am thinking I may fix her up for some fun.

I found an 18" hard nose bar to fit it in the pile of bars I got with it and the 090, and its in great shape.

The top handle is broken.
I would be interested to know if anyone has one in better condition sitting about?

The 08's still have a following by vintage saw collectors, so it will still have some value to it, I didn't make much off of mine when I sold them, but didn't expect to either........also wanted to add that the 08 power head may have been developed as a multi power head tool, with oiler mounted in the bar/clutch cover, once removed, it was then able to used as the power head for the BT-08 and the FS-08 as well.....fs_08.jpg s-l400.jpg

Yes, at least it was used as one. I thought I had saved a brochure about it, but can't find it now.
