OK all you Stihl-Heads, 056 parts availability??

A friend of mine has an 056 that ran when last used....(a decade or so ago) and I think he's about to ask me to get it running for him. I'm still working on learning more about the Stihls but I have a long way to go. Am I going to have trouble finding the usual parts a saw might need after sitting for ten years?? I'm thinking fuel line (I do know that at least SOME Stihls have fitted fuel lines) carb kits, ignition components possibly, air filter, etc etc. I was astounded when I priced carb kit for the same friends 038 Super with a Bing carb, boy are they proud of those!

Any issues to look for specifically with the 056? I know it's a pretty big ol' hawg, 87cc or so. Any other info you guys want to share about it??

The 056 ignition was well known for going out. There’s threads about how to fix them. That’s one of the well known issues with the 056

Last I checked fuel line was available. Carb kits are avaialable...either be a walbro or tillotson. Good luck on ignition stuff. Air filters are nla also. I have a box of random 056 parts..and I mean random. I think I have a complete ignition too..but not the newest version that came on the magnums.

If the ignition has failed then the Chinese copies work well. They're still spendy at around 90 bucks, so know the brand you're replacing... I believe that's Bosch or SEM, I hope someone will correct me if I'm wrong.
I installed one for a customer several months ago who has good feedback. He said it's been a cuttin sumbitch since I last saw it. He bucks big rounds for a firewood business so there's been many good long cuts to put it to the test.
There are many air filters on eBay, oem and aftermarket.
Everything 045 fits unless you're swapping cylinders.
Sägenspezi is the place for aftermarket seals if you can't find oem. They're good quality.

It had a bad crank seal in that video, Jim caught it after and replaced both, it's even angrier now.

That's a fun saw to cut with. Those were the first two cuts after port work and it hadn't yet settled in to be fine tuned.
I'd like to put a 10 pin on it with a good race chain to see how well it can eat cants. It seems to have the power to pull one pretty hard.

You're half way home on the ignition issue if it has the Bosch setup. The problem is almost always the cap under the coil potting if it isn't the kill wire insulation rubbing through and grounding out. It can be bypassed and an external replacement installed. The trick is finding the correct spec cap. Here's the step-by-step thread for the fix.

Have read of successful Nova and Atom chip approaches as well, but getting timing dialed in seems to be an issue there. No timing changes needed with the one in the link. It just works.

Haven't seen a Chinese knock-off for either the SEM or Bosch ignition for the 1115 saws. Read there was a German version, though. Maybe one in the same?

Good luck with it. Have one sitting here myself needing rebuilt. Has a bad SEM ignition module. Fortunately I ran across a Bosch coil and flywheel for it and intend to apply the fix in the link above if I can find a cap. Haven't looked too hard yet. If I find a source I'll post it here.

Well, this thing hasn't landed on my bench just yet but I have a feeling it will be soon. I just wanted to consult with you folks to get a feel of whether or not I'll be able to help this thing live again if it needs more than just some basic TLC. I'll post up if/when it shows up.

Other options that I have discovered are the Sagenspezi ignitions. There is one for around $110 shipped and there is another for around $65 shipped. The $110 one is a direct fit with the Bosch electronic flywheel and worked great for me. The $65 one is for a points ignition but I discovered that it's possible to use a Bosch electronic flywheel on a points ignition. The poles are the same but the key way and timing mark are different. Basically, advance the timing a flywheel key width (same as with Nova module) and it should work,

You know, I'd feel a lot more comfortable if you had worded it "vintage saw precision hacking". Lol
I appreciate the kind words, I'm learning what I can, as fast as I can, but there's only so much I can learn from actual hands on experience. Most of the technical info wouldn't be known to me if it weren't for the willingness of the more experienced members who've been nice enough to share their knowledge over the years.

I believe Sagenspezi is German made.

I bought an electronic conversion from them in Germany for an 041FB, it was made in Brasil by a company called Magnetron. Have used quite a few of their 266 modules and coils, so far so good.
