One of the guys in camp hunts occasionally with a 338 UM. 250 gr Swift A frame....non tracking bullets.

I hit an elk 15 years ago with one. I hit it in no-mans land above the lungs and below the spine. Took an 8" pie shape out of both lungs and promptly removed 8" of spine in the process. Yep...non tracking lol

Most of the time I hunt in the woods, a long shot is a 100yrds. I like a small caliber small bullet for whitetail and yotes.....if I know I'm going to be on a field or bigger animals I take a bigger caliber.

In 1991 I drew a MI elk tag. I had an '06 that was a tack driver. The ol man insisted I use his 7mm mag BAR. I wounded a probable state record 8x8. Double brow tines 2-1/2' long. Long story short, next year in deer season he missed a big buck with it and found out the scope mounts were loose. The following year, he missed again and never used the gun again.
After missing the elk, I hated his gun. Before the next year i went out and bought a Browning A bolt in 300 win mag. It's been my main deer rifle since 1992.
