I had some excitement last evening. Was outside messing with a saw and inbetween running it I kept hearing people yelling. I just thought it was the neihbors kids. The closest house to me is quite a ways off.

The next thing I heard was "help". So I started listening and headed closer. I yelled and they said " we fell from our treestand call 911". Oh crap, I called 911 and headed out to the stand on my neihbors property to find the stand had colapsed and they were hanging there and couldnt move.

I had 3 departmenta show up for the rescue. Only thing that was hurt was thier egos. While we were waiting I asked if they wanted me to take thier pic. Haha they said yes and he gave me his number to send them to him.:DView attachment 36706View attachment 36707View attachment 36708

Lucky its a rescue not a recovery. Found a guy hanging upside down from his one man stand here a few years back. Not pretty.

I should clarify I'm not the guy that found him. One of my sons firefighter buddies did and assisted in the recovery. Tough day.

That has gotta be a tough one for the first responders. Probably one of the calls that will stay with those guys forever.

I know when Lisa started nursing the floor that she worked on right out of college was a stroke floor. That floor also had Hospice rooms. The first month she worked on that floor she had three of her patients pass away. She struggled. In her case she had to keep telling herself that these were old patients who lived a long life and they went into the hospital as a Hospice patient.
She says that the 5 years that she was on that floor made her who she is.

This spring she joined our local Fire Department. Every time the pager goes off I worry about one of those calls like your sons buddies have gone on. It is circumstances like that really have to take a toll on the personnel.

My hat goes off to all First Responders and Paramedics. They see and deal with people on some of the worst days of their lives.

Sad deal for someone just looking to do a little hunting, spend some time in the woods. When you get upside down in a situation like that, can't cut yourself loose, otherwise, its sad but it's just a matter of time with gravity.

And to be honest with everyone here right now...I've never even worn a harness, nor otherwise in a stand. Pretty much a damn fool...nor did I ever have the same for my son when he hunted with me. Yeh...pretty fuggin stupid...we got away with it after all these yrs. not quite sure how this guy may've been tied in though.

But that's a tough situation to run across, no doubt, for the fella upside down.

After last night I thought it was a good idea to take a walk with my boy and his buddy that hunts our ground to check the stands we setup. He has 3 singles and 1 double out.

We took my climber down to a funnel he has been wanting to hunt also.

I don't use a harness every time either. I've had them installed in the stand before, though. I went to using all 2 man ladder stands, not only for extra room, but also for the weight rating. I always have help setting them up, and I go up while there's help there and get everything anchored in, and jump on it and jiggle it and retighten everything.

My last old school treestand was in a tree behind my house. A buddy wanted to borrow it to go bear hunting. I climbed up the screw-in steps 20' up and as I started to take the ratchet straps off, one of the steps pulled out of the tree...and then the other one. Fortunately I was bear hugging the tree. The bottom of my thighs continued to take out each and every one of those fuggin screw-in steps all the way to the ground. Unfortunately, I was wearing shorts and no shirt. Legs and chest were rashed pretty bad. Bottom of my thighs were black and blue for 2 weeks from hitting every tree step on the way down. I laugh about it now, but it hurt like a mfer when it happened

I climb these little tiny sticks for a livingIMG_1242.JPG
I made the mistake once after I gaffed out of trying to hug the pole. My face and chest paid dearly.

I wear a safety harness everytime I'm in the stand. Alot cheaper to buy straps for every tree than it is to pay for one visit(or stay) in the hospital
Visit an Urgent care. Same Dr's there. They are eating the hospitals lunch. No overhead to have the patients pay in a small setting, unlike the hospital.

Gettin colder Got the STOVE loaded with some beach and oak

;)

Finally broke down, when the thermostat read 60F and the Mutts were crowding the wife over the Poncho liner.
Red oak, and some of the Maple from Liberty Hyde Bailey's place, that was dropped last year.

It's kinda weird tossing hunks of a tree into the fireplace, that an American literary and agricultural icon grew up under....

Free wood is free wood, and he was a practical gent.
