Good evening smellers, learned something new today, fixed a bad spot on a crankshaft where the seal rides with silver solder. Finished it up on the lathe like a brand new one, even though it's going on fifty years old. Pretty neat. :)
Pics please.

Never would have thought of fixing a crank with silver solder. Pretty cool lets hear more about it.

I never heard of it before today and then went and did it. Buddy damaged his twin cylinder Rotax crank pulling the PTO side outboard bearing, right where the seal rides. So I was like... dude this ain't gonna fly. I thought about welding and then sleaving it, but both make the crank weaker. So I talked to cousin Buck and he said to solder it, but it had to be a hard solder with a high tin content.
So, with a propane torch and some flux I was able to get it built up, then cut it down and polished it on the lathe to the shaft size. Can barely even see the repair, don't even think pics will do any good.
Was pretty neat and something old school to keep in the tool chest of my mind for the future.

Pretty good fix I think. Last I even thought about silver soldering was sights on old rifles.
