Yup, like a little melon baller. I love to hear one chewing on a piece of wood just before it gets tossed in the wood burner.

Are those the ones that kill trees?
To be honest, I'm not 100% sure if these are the ones to blame. I know they can make a mess of a tree. Perhaps @Stump Shot would know for sure?

Not to my knowledge, they go after dead pine and reproduce in it, after the female lays the eggs, it stains the wood blue. This is why at the local sawmill in the summertime has sprinklers running atop their log piles. I believe the ones out west that killed off millions of acres of forest are a different critter. Although that wood was blue stained as well, at least what was salvaged and not left to rot and be a fire hazard. But even a dead tree evokes the feelers of the kind meaning people.
There are lots and I mean lots of pine trees here, some in plantations, I've never in my life seen a die off from insects. I'm sure there are some chewing away out in the log pile here as I type this though.
