Morning men, -1 F supposedly headed to 21 F, we shall see

Coffee and getting stuff together to go to Homer for a few days to visit the granddaughters

#16 was my limit back when I could see well enough to tie
Now I’d need to do everything under a big magnifying lamp.
Still have all the stuff, just haven’t used it in years.

I can still tie down to 22 but need 2X cheaters and lots of patience

There isn't the need for size 22 flies up here, but I lived and fished in several places with ultra selective trout that could get picky enough that it called for 22

These days about the smallest I tie on a regular basis is 16 drys for Grayling

I don't fish for salmon as much as I used to simply because it is harder each year to escape the crowds

I would rather fish small dry flies for Grayling with one of my bamboo fly rods and not have a bunch of slobs breathing down my neck

The one turned sideways looks like a coyote but the one facing head on sure looks wolfy to me

What species do you all usually cut up there?

Most common are Red Oak, White Oak, Black Walnut, and Hard Maple.

This job I’ll be starting tomorrow is a Black Walnut job. Been cutting mixed hardwoods all winter so far.

I couldn’t remember what was up your way. The only time I’ve been there was in Scouts and we went to Ely, MN. I was 13 then so I didn’t pay too much attention to timber, lol.

That’s funny! And cool though, that you were that far north. Minnesota’s tree species change drastically from where I am, in the south eastern corner along the Mississippi River, to the northern forests. Up there it’s a lot of poplar (Aspen - no tulip variety) birch, and of course white pine.

We did 14 days in BWCA and Quetico in Canada. Best experience I had in scouts. I figured it changed a lot across the state. Sounds like you all have similar to us.

I didn’t know the pack out had issues. I have the bigger stand up one and it’s been solid but I miss the sound from there old 18 volt radios that were powered by Rockford. The pack outs sound good I feel

I had one of those Rockford Fosgate Milwaukee radios (with the roll cage around it) back in 2003 or something, good sound, and it worked great for the decade or so I had it.

Maybe I just got a few packout radio lemons, IDK? I know an electrician crew that had a few packout radios warranty'd also. They have a decent amount of 1 & 2 star reviews on the net. I never read any reviews until after I had mine. I really liked the sound thou, it pumped, with not much distortion when cranked up. My 1st one the charger function only worked 2-3 times, then it quit. It's supposed to charge a battery when plugged into the wall, which it did a few times, than it just stopped working. So I got a new one, 2nd one was fine for a few months, than the whole LCD screen went blank, the radio & AC jack for my MP3, still worked, just couldn't see any modes/functions on the screen. I forget what went wrong with the 3rd one I had? When it started giving me problems, I took it back for a store credit.

A Milwaukee rep at service center in Denver told me they had a decent amount of packout radios coming in for warranty. No clue if they were using cheaper components in them after the whole covid supply chain BS or what. But for $350 I expected years of use without problems, like other radios of theirs I've had. Rep said they would warranty it, or I could take it back to home depot. I took it back.

If I was gonna spend north of $300 for a work radio, I would get one of the bigger JBL BoomBox's. I work with a guy sometimes, that has one, it thumps. I don't even get my radio out when he's on the same job with me.

My dad took a few of us, on several trips to BWCA, in the late 80's and early 90's.

I'd like to go up there again at some point.
