I think if Cliff hadn't died they would have never turned gay. Although Jason Newsted did rock. I blame Lars. He was never as good of a drummer as his mind told him he was.

I've got (well, it's technically my Dads) a ton of CCR, Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Beatles, all that stuff on vinyl.

It's probably a bit too metal/harsh for your taste based off what you've mentioned.
You definitely wouldn't like their Far beyond driven album..
Maybe Cemetary gates..or hollow are a couple more mellow songs
