Retirement killed my dad. He just sat down and that was it.
I hear that a lot about men from my dad’s generation

They never knew how to turn it off and simply relax

It just wasn’t the way they were raised

Now it’s “if I can’t work from home in my pajamas then I’m quitting and suing you because my feelers is hurted”

That's how I feel every time I roll up to the border checkpoints

I am squeaky clean and they almost always treat me like a suspected criminal

No offense to you Canuck members but I am not a big fan which is sad because Canada is an amazingly beautiful place with a lot of awesome people, just not a fan of your government
My ass puckers I have to visit a border station, going to US or coming home, always uneasy just my nature I guess as I've never had an issue.

I guess its no different than seeing a cop in your rear view mirror when you are going 3 mph under the speed limit with all the appropriate lights on and a current license plate and you signaled your lane change and you STILL have the hair stand up on the back of your neck

Real jobs can be over rated from time to time
What sucks is the fact that so many people today don't think that farming, ranching, logging, trades, etc are "real jobs"

They think if you don't work in a cubicle somewhere you aren't contributing

That comes from a lack of education in my opinion

We have those pecker head son of a bìtches around here that purposely go 6mph under the limit on a perfect day.
I bet I pass a cop a month on the multi lane roads around here.
I have no problem passing them going 2mph over. Speedometers are only required to be within 3mph accuracy.

Being self employed is the worry for me. Yeah.....I have a fair amount of assets. I'm not broke. But will I be able to live on what little Social Security I'll be able to draw when I'm 67?

Im clean and sober now. And I have all the right papers and license now. Pull me over. Awhile back that was not the case.
That's exactly how I feel.

I remember the first time I got pulled over after getting clean. The officer took my licence back to his patrol car.....came back in a few minutes and asked me to step out of the truck and walk to the rear of the vehicle. I did. Then he asked me if I had any drugs or paraphernalia on me. I said "No sir.....not today sir". Then he asked if I minded him searching my truck. I said "No sir.....I don't mind, go right ahead". Then I popped the tailgate and sat down.....knowing that this was going to take awhile. He called for backup, and they searched. They even took off the air filter cover. They went thru my tool boxes. Looked under the seat, in the glove box. Of course they didn't find anything. The whole time I happily answered their questions, with a yes sir, and a no sir. I never became angry.....because I knew better. The chances of one of them adding "something" to my belongings was a very real possibility had I became a smart ass. So I just sat on that tailgate and chilled out. When they were satisfied, the guy that pulled me over gave me back my licence, and told me that I was free to go. Then he asked what sort of tooth was on the chain around my neck. I told him that it was an elk tooth.....and that it was part of the new path I was trying to learn to live. He smiled and walked off.

I was both terrified and elated. I knew that I was clean.....and didn't have anything on me. BUT.....with my record, I was worried about being treated fairly. These days.....I don't worry about a damn thing. LOL

Neither is anyone else
Well......I'm sorta stuck in my situation. My own fault of course. But a getting a "real job" or traveling out of the country are never gonna be on my bingo card.
Your too old for a real job
But you would make it as a Walmart greeter

My years with the state came close to completely erasing my Social Security benefits

They didn’t take out SS and gave us a matched thrift savings plan instead that’s still in an account that I have to start tapping into when I’m 73

That’s in addition to my state pension

But because I have that TSP the SS hit me with a “windfall provision” that cut my SS benefits by more than half and then of course they hit you for taxes and stuff AND the monthly premium for Medicare

When it’s all said and done my monthly SS benefit is under $400

30 years of paying in to SS and they find a way to *f-word me

I drive 10 over all the time, they don’t even blink here unless you are at least 20 over.

Are you talking a cop sitting on the side of the road or actually rolling down the road?
If the cops doing the speed limit and I roll past at 10 over in the hammer lane, I'm getting a coupon..
