I guess growing up going into Mexican dominated markets for 20 years and seeing whole beef and pig heads in the display cases kind of took the mystery out of those kind of things for me

When we went across the river to the Central Mercado in Juarez it was an enormous open air market and you went back a hundred years in time

They sold every hind of meat you could possibly imagine from all over Mexico and Central America

Iguana, monkey, tapir, etc and you knew what it was because they were skinning and butchering it right there in front of you

So funny the way our country is.
Other places just use whatever is available.
Guess it goes back to those puritan roots.
Also a lot of traditional ways that oppressed people that fled here took with them.
Seems strange to some now, but a lot of the food and ways of making it arent that different from what people are trying to put out as "traditional" etc now.

You guys probably get sick of my stories but this is a good one. In 1984 I was hired by Atari/Warner Communications to build a large plastic injection molding plant to make all the plastic components for the Atari game systems

After we got it up and running we needed people (women) to trim and pack parts coming off the lines and one of the guys there was ex-army and married to a Korean woman

She put the word out and soon we had probably 75% Korean Army wives for the labor force

They would always go back to the furthest corner of this enormous facility to eat lunch because some of the others objected to the kimchi, etc that was their normal lunch

I was poking around back there one day during lunch and the ladies offered me a plate of food, meat in a spicy sauce, rice, and kimchi

I ate it all but while I was eating they could barely keep from busting out laughing and when I finally finished they couldn't hold it and finally just lost is laughing

I asked the one lady I knew spoke English what was so funny and she blurts out "you just ate dog", without missing a beat I told her "you know, that was probably the best dog I ever ate" and casually walked off

I had been eating off Juarez taco carts for 20 years and KNEW I had eaten my fair share of mystery meat so this didn't phase me

I earned a standing invitation to lunch with them and took them up on it from time to time

I did ask the ex-army guy later if it really was dog and he said hell yes, it was a habit he couldn't break them of

My stepdad was a Japanese national who lived in Korea for two years in the 60's. He said dog and horse were commonly eaten in the smaller villages.

Some friends our age went on a European trip back in the 90s and were served horse in 2 separate restaurants in Belgium

Not touristy places, small cafes where the locals ate

Was one of those things my grandfather told me that stuck with me.
He grew up in the depression years where they would eat whatever they could get.
He would NOT eat chitterlings(fried pig intestines). He said that was just disgusting.

He said if I was at a hog rendering and they cooked brains and eggs to just eat it and dont think about it, because it was REALLY good.
It's not one of those things I would actually make to eat, but I'm glad I got to experience.

Head cheese is my "hell no you can't make me" food, although I will admit I have never tried it either

We have a few horse feedlots in the area, the horses get shipped live to Japan for processing. They use the big Antonov cargo planes. Not saying if I support it or mot, lots locally want the practice stopped, including one of the local crazies that runs a horse rescue.

My wife is a former Army/Air Force wife.
First husband went Army then Air Force. I get Long with him because hes a decent guy, and we both love his kid.

Second husband was a Marine then left and rejoined Air Force.
Korean and Vietnam campaigns.
He did some years with CS before going private sector.

Then she met my dumb arse after the last husband passed away.(yes, he was a bit older than her, but good for him having a sweet young thing like her).

She has told me a few stories about the Korean girls and Kimchi, as well as some about the poor bastards that picked Phillipino girls. I hear they can be a bit spicy...

That's a tough one, and pretty much no win situation

I don't want someone in another country telling me what I can and can't eat, but for a lot of people they draw the line at people eating "pets"

I hear you. I’m both excited and not excited to go to Europe and eat at McDonalds and order a gluten free bun right off the menu. However, I know the meat is likely horse.

There used to be a Dutch bakery up the road from my MIL that we would visit, they always had some roast horse in the meat case, was not appealing to me at all.

I don’t think I could travel to Korea knowing that pretty much all meat was dog.

There used to be a black girl that was a street walker on Liberty Ave. That went by Bojangles...my dad said she was there in the 80s.

I can see where a lot of folks here dont care for that.
My "adopted" daughter here is crazy over basically any kind of animal.
She gets it that they arent people, but loves them anyway.
I'm fairly neutral on that. I get that other folks need to eat too, I just wouldnt be ok with them trying to take my pup or Heathers' pets for dinner.

He said Clairton had a lot of Brown Sugar walkin the street back in the 70s and 80s too, he said they turned an old school in to apartments and they had to kick the hookers outta the building every morning before they started working

My uncle married a Phillipina.
She has always been a sweetheart. Very warm and outgoing.
I dont know how they get along when they arent around us, but she has always been really nice every time ive met her.
I was just going on some of the stories Susan told about times when she was with her first husband in Germany and California. May be that those gals had good reason to be upset with a young GI.

The 2 huge Hysters were mainly for unloading rough cut Ponderosa pine from rail cars and they got the snot beat out of them

They were essentially the same size but were a mismatched pair and once the owner of the company decided to cancel the factory service contract it was all down to me

Being mismatched I had to try my best to keep spare parts and service parts on hand because they simply couldn’t be down

The owner got rid of the fleet of smaller Hysters that ran around in the building moving lumber and product and got a Fleet of Clarks but then he did the same thing, cancelled the service contract after a year I guess and it was all on to me to keep them running

That was in addition to millwrighting all the saws, fingerjointers, molders, etc in that enormous plant

I agree that the Hysters were the weak link

I've run a lot of different forklifts, I kinda enjoyed that part of warehouse work. My last warehouse job had Hyster 80s. They sat up real high and getting in and out of them all day really started hurting my knees and hips. The hydraulics were very touchy and they didn't have a separate clutch for putting it in the ketchup to lift a heavy pallet.

My favorite were the Komatsus. They were super smooth and comfortable to operate. Weren't as powerful as the Hysters, but they made up for it in how easy they were to operate.
