I was always told that you go by 5-6hp per foot
Of course the soil plays a role in that.

Crocs are great I had a strong opinion towards them till I was gifted a pair and now I use them all the time

I don't know how many pairs I have worn out so far. Bottoms get kind of thin after a while.

Same here. I don’t wear them out in public, just around my garage and yard.

If that tractor is shuttle shift, I think I'd send it and see if there was enough traction to be had.

40hp is a bit low for that size disc, will have to be less aggressive with disc angles. Is the tractor hydro or gear? How much land are we talking? What is he going to be planting? If a one off for getting hay started on 20 or so acres, he will be alright. If he is going to be row cropping, you are seriously undersized on the tractor. Not too hilly I assume either? So many questions. Tractor weight has more bearing than HP, but you need both.

And rocks. Big rocks, little rocks. In between rocks. According to the scientists my area is where one of the glaciers had stopped during the ice age. Flattened it out and left us with sand and large boulders.
Our sandy soil is what makes the county I'm in and the 4 surrounding it the second leading potato producer behind all of Idaho. Lots of potatoes and potato heads in these parts..

Won't be me until he screws up the tractor, then I'm the one who has to fix it.
He starts things but never finishes. I'd be shocked if seed ever gets put in the planter.

I'm assuming my Dad will have some input about this when they get back.
Every time my parents go away, something new arrives and Dad has to then tell them it needs to go away.

That harrow needs 65 to 70 HP to pull it down here in GA.
The tractor will need more wheel weights on all wheels to get traction which will put a lot of stress on it causing wear, breakage.

I was always told the "rule of thumb" for pulling a disk was 5 drawbar horsepower per foot of width, really tearing it up at an aggressive rake at a good pace. Most of my disk pulling had been with antiques, and we get away with 2-3 drawbar horsepower and just pulling a lower gear.

I figured whatever was being disked was close to Stevens Point, smallish rocks and sandy, so it ain't like the clay and rocks we have in the southeast part of the state. Thus my "I'd send it" judgment
