I used to live where this happened.
It was a lucky near-miss for a man who had an unnervingly close call with a mountain lion over the weekend.

There's a lot of lions in that area, I had one stalk me for miles once, on a hiking trail, every hair on my body was standing up! It followed me for close to 3 miles, it never got real close, but it was close enough I did not like it. It went around me, up the hill than back down, and popped out in front of me on the trail, I held my jacket up over my head, and stood my ground, and it went back in the woods, it kept following for a while after the little stand off we had. I picked up the biggest stick I could find, it was about 7 feet long and 6 inches around. Figure if it did attack me, I would get a few licks in before it ate me.
I was within 15 feet of another one, I went out to get something out of my truck at around 11 pm, it was standing behind the shed, watching two deer by the trees. It saw me, we locked eyes, I grabbed my flash light out of my pocket, shined it on him, and yelled, he ran off.
